The food is horrible. A Storm came through and there was no power. Where was the back up generator? It got extremely Hot.. it was pitch black in our booth where we had to eat. They wouldn't comp the meal,or even give 10% for our inconvenience. Imagine eating and you can't even see your hand in front of you. Everyone was trying to use their cell phones. Did I mention it was hot. Sweating. At least be gracious for your customers!! Full price in the dark meal = terrrible dining experience. Not even a "We apologize folks"!!! Just Greedy Never again.

This is the Fleming Island location for this local chain of "Mexican" restaurants, though the cuisine is much more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican. It always seems to be packed, even at 2:00 or 3:00 PM. Expect a short wait, but everything on the menu is good. They serve some of the best tacos in the greater Jacksonville area.

  • Scott L.

A little crowded. Had fajitas, the only gave 2 tortilla shells. Had to ask for more. Service was a little slow, but the food was good.

  • Chris F.

Three words....Tacos Al Pastor...simply put this is one of the tastiest taco dishes you will ever have. The service is always good, the tortillas chips and salsa are always fresh. Good food, good drinks and easy on the wallet.

Great Mexican food with very low prices. Highly recommend it. Long lines on Friday and Saturday nights. If you have the time, grab a beer or margarita at the bar and stand around with everyone else in parking lot. It's a tradition around here.

Large portions of.mediocre unseasoned meat and cheese. Fajita meat dry and tasted as though it had been broiled 2 or 3 times at least. The best I can say is it isn't the worst I have had in this area.

Special Order Number 11!!! that is all

Worst service on Fleming Island. Waited 20 minutes till drinks showed in a 2/3rds filled restaurant. Got attitude from wait staff when I sent back meals because our cheese dip (pour cheese into bowl) had not arrived yet. Got thrown an unmentionable insult in Spanish in front of me (I speak Spanish.)

I don't know what all the complaints about service are about in these Yelp reviews. I've eaten here many times and the service has always been perfectly fine. Better service than a lot of places in the Jacksonville area, to tell you the truth! If you receive less than stellar service here, it's probably more about you than it is about them. As for the food, if you go in here expecting authentic regional Mexican cuisine, that is your second error. This is good old fashioned Tex-Mex cooking, nothing more, nothing less and it's pretty darned good Tex-Mex at that. The prices are great (especially the lunch specials [that run until 5PM!]), they give you a ton and I've never had anything here that did not make me want to clean my plate. You can't beat those giant, 32 ounce draught beers either. So... just go here, mind your manners, don't be a jerk, know what to expect and you'll have a great experience. The La Nope mini-chain is probably some of the best Tex-Mex the Jax area has to offer and of all the La Nopes, this one's probably the best of them all.

We moved to Fleming Island a little over a year ago and we were very happy to have this La Nop in our neighborhood. Previously, the food was flavorful, good quality and all with a nice price. However, things change... My favorite meal is the Special Order #11 - basically 2 burritos with chopped beef and seasoned with onions, peppers and more. The beef WAS always great, but not anymore. About 6 months ago, they changed the meat quality to something that compares to the meat that's used to make canned dog food (no exaggeration)! Much of it is nothing but gristle, fat and BIG ARTERIES (veins). Unappetizing and inedible! I complain about the quality of the meat almost every time and ask them to change it back. So why do I keep ordering it? It's my favorite meal there plus I hope that my complaints have been heard and the good meat is back. No such luck! Other La Nops don't serve this grade of meat that I've seen. I hate to Yelp this negative review on one of my favorite restaurants, but now I have to make sure management hears about the problem. I am about to abandon hopes of better meat and stop going here to eat. Already we've gone from 1 to 2 times per week to 1 to 2 times per month eating here. Service at this location used to be great but really dropped not long after the meat change. We used to get chips and salsa as we were seated along with our silverware. Now sometimes we're there quite a while before getting chips and usually we don't get silverware until after our food is served - we have to ask for it. Other menu items still appear to be good (for the most part). But the chopped beef currently being served has got to go!!! If this La Nop improves the quality of the beef to where it was - I will remove or edit this Yelp and bring up the stars. Until then, this La Nop is lucky to get 2 stars...

Food is decent however service is lacking. We waited forever for our food and then had to wait for our silverware and then the tortillas. And in the end, we got charged an extra beer. Not coming back to this specific location. No bueno

  • Cari B.

Unfortunately this La Nop was a La Nope for me . The food quality was not up to par . The salsa was flavorless and had a murky coloration to it . There were flies flying around while we were trying to eat our meal which made me lose my appetite very quickly . Just not a good experience at all .

  • Lindy B.

Authentic Mexican food? NOT! The tortilla chips were good and fresh. It went downhill from there. The salsa was just ok. Our waiter acted like he couldn't be bothered. I asked for lemon for my tea 3 times before he brought it. My husband ordered beef fajitas. The beef had to have been boiled before being put on the grill. Boiling meat gives it a certain texture and it is not appealing. He said the flavor wasn't too bad. Spring onions were used which wasn't what he was used to. I ordered a small beef taco salad. The beef had no flavor and it was the same consistency as Taco Bell's...mush. Wish we could find a good Mexican place to eat. This is not it!

Great, cheap food (HUGE portions for the prices). I've usually had good experiences as far as service goes but when I'm paying this kind of money, I don't mind a bit of waiting. The parking lot is disaster (it always has been) and they are very busy (seemingly all the time). A Jax classic and a great location.

  • Mike N.

I've tried this place twice now.. Average food at best.. Anyone who thinks this is mexican food has never had Real mexican food.. Everything tastes the same.. Service is horrible... I'm really not sure why they are busy.. Maybe people are ok with mediocre food and service.. Not me... Guess I'll keep looking..

Good lunch, well prepared, typical Mexican - if you want the dish with more spice, ask for it, but be prepared, it will be spicy. Plenty of food, and they are happy to provide a box to go. Clean establishment. We've eaten at several La Nopaleras in the area, and this is the one we prefer, and to which we'll return.

    (3)
  • Becky G.

This place is always busy. They offer really good Tex-Mex style food, at good prices. Their magaritas are tasty and strong :) Very kid friendly, as well.

Good food!! But service could be better. Seems like somewhat under staffed some times. Overall great place to sit down, have a beer, and get some food!

  • Austin M.

The food is fantastic and I would go their almost every week but not anymore because we have been getting awful service some days weren't too bad but came to the last straw when someone treated me like an idiot because I said that the thing I ordered was a lot smaller than last time. He kept saying that I should just order something else in a very harsh way.

    (3)
  • Jasmine M.

Food is served really fast, everyone is very polite, funny and knows how to interact with you instead of just asking you about your food. La Nop has always been me & my family's favorite Mexican restaurant for years & we will not go anywhere else.

Great food! Five people in our party and we all enjoyed. They made a dish that was not on the menu with no trouble. Service was fine. Cute place.

  • Matt P.

I have been coming here regularly for years, as well as the other locations. The food does not seem to be as good at this location as it is at the others. The last couple of times here the house margaritas seem to go up in price, and down on flavor. I realize that they are "house" margaritas, but they are just not as good anymore. We will probably stop coming to this location for a while and just go to the one on Kingsly. After watching waitress ignore us and her other tables for 10 minutes talking to a friend at the bar, I had to lower review to 2 stars..

    (2)
  • Needa H.

I've been coming here for years! I do have to say it's just not what it used to be. The salsa doesn't have any flavor anymore. It's like straight tomato sauce. It used to have loads of cilantro and such, which was so good, but no more. The beans are literally pure liquid. No exaggeration. So 'liquidy' (I'm sure that's not a word) you couldn't eat them with a fork. It's impossible. Like eating soup with a fork, if you know what I mean. It's a shame, because it used to be our go-to a couple times a week, but not anymore. Not sure if management has changed or what, but this location is no Bueno. Hopefully they will read these reviews and go back to how it is used to be. I can only hope. In the meantime, I'm going to have to try some other places out to find something better. It's a shame.

When I saw that it said real Mexican food I went inside and we tried it this is not real Mexican food it is not even close to it, it is the worst food I've ever had in any restaurant that says its Mexican I went down home and called tamale tuesdays and placed a order for real Mexican food man that is real Mexican food not this I don't even know what to call it it was gross.

  • Andrea H.

My family and I love La Nop! The drinks are yummy and the food is great! And the prices can't be beat! I always get the same thing: a frozen strawberry margarita, chips & white queso to start and the #22 combo (burrito, taco, rice & beans!)

Decent place to get Mexican food on Fleming Island. Service was good and the food was okay. I had the crunchy beef tacos. I would return.

LOVE IT!! I've tried Mexican food in Georgia & Indiana & couldn't wait to get back home to Florida for the best tasting Mexican food! Some had complained about the service, I say tip accordingly just like we do at any restaurant. Anywhere you eat, you're going to have poor servers, good servers, & GREAT servers. They earn good or bad tips.

Ordered take-out, picked it up, paid for it and when I got home, half the order was missing. Even McDonald's does better.

I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why Jacksonvillians are so in love with this chain. I've been dragged to multiple locations and it's always the same at each one. The food is forgettable and often on the bland side. The chips always taste stale to me. The restaurants always feel dirty as well. It's like there's a coating of grease over everything. The prices are good, however. The service is also usually decent enough so I guess it gets some credit for that. If you want good Mexican food, there's a lot better choices.

Was in the place for 15 minutes before receiving any service. Waitress just standing around at counter

Horrible service!!! Waitress would rather drink beer than do her job!! Worse experience ever at a restaurant.

Pretty good food, atmosphere and alcohol for cheap. Winning combination in my opinion. Be sure to get the queso for the chips.

My wife and I are relatively new to the area and we are still scoping out good Mexican restaurants in the Jax area. Tonight we found our way over to Flemming Island for reasons unknown, and we selected La Nopalera. We were seated promptly and the usual fanfare and whirlwind of waiters with baskets of fresh (or at least hot) tortilla chips and salsa. The menus were placed and there isn't a lot on the menu as far as diversity, but the menu should fit everyone's niche. I'll make this a short review in contrast to my lengthy ones, but service was lacking. I was quick to finish off a 32 once glass of water, and while I was patient, I needed a refill for over 15 minutes and our waiter had not checked back in. Apparently my wife had been here for lunch with her co-workers and the service we had is a sharp contrast to her experience. The finale was my wife asked for a to-go cup for her iced tea, and that never showed, even after waiting for 15 minutes. Needless to say, we left without a proper receptacle to place her iced tea into. Service sucks and the food was ok. Nothing great. The food was plentiful and you get a lot for what you pay for, but still I wasn't thrilled with my service. I will not return.

I love Mexican food and this is a family style restaurant. There are table and booths. The bar is decently stocked. Decor is contemporary. There are several flatscreen TV sets to watch sports. When you are seated, you get chips and salsa. Try the cheese dip - it is great! Menu selection is good and the food comes out fresh and hot. Service is very good although has declined since they opened. Staff are nice and friendly. It's worth the wait. You can always get a margarita at the bar until you sit, or walk to Walgreeens.... Highly recommend.

I was at the Fleming Island location tonight with my 72 year old Mother. There was a table of 6 adults behind us who obviously had to much to drink. They were not talking loud but almost screaming obscenities at each other at the table so the whole restaurant could hear them. There was a bunch of tables very upset that this was happening as well. I asked our waiter Enrique to have the manager address this concern before a fight broke out ASAP. The table right next to us with a small child and baby got up and walked out. There was other families who were in shock of the peoples behavior. The Manager never showed up and nothing was ever done. They just kept serving them more drinks and blew it off. I then got up to pay my bill and asked for the manager! He came out and just acted like he knew nothing about it. I let him know that I had requested his presents to the dinning room to take care of this mess that was out of control. All he said was "Sorry about that" I asked how I could contact the owner of the restaurant. I was told we don't share that information. I will be back to La Nopalera at another location because we enjoy their food but this Fleming Island Mgr. stinks!!!

As Ashley points out, there are some mixed reviews of La Nop on Fleming Island, but it has been consistently good for us. The waitstaff is attentive and always get the order correct, even at the busiest of times (and this location does get busy). I would highly recommend the carnitas, which are cooked to perfection, with enough for at least one lunch of leftovers. I am amazed how good this location of La Nopalera is, compared to the one on Argyle Forest Road where the service is truly appalling.

  • Rob D.

Up until the last two times I've been here it was my favorite Mexican restaurant in Jax. Not so much any more. Service at the Fleming Island location was horrible. Both times it was not overly crowded but food did not come for 52 minutes and only after I threatened to cancel my order if they didn't bring it soon boxed togo rather than dine-in. First time I tipped, second I didn't. My son went back a week later with friends and said he had the same experience. Sad. Food still OK, so I suggest take-out.

  • Lindsey M.

Absolutely terrible! If I could give it zero stars, I would! The service was awful. Our waiter (who I later found out was the manager) acted as if we were an inconvenience and couldn't stay at our table long enough for us to ask anything. It took me asking for my bill to get a refill. I tried to wave down another waiter because ours was obviously busy (he was the only one working the tables and the other 3 were standing around flirting and playing on their phone), I made eye contact with one and she stopped flirting and turned and walked away into the back and the other two dispersed and I was not helped. One kid was just standing behind the bar talking on his phone. I got up to pay my bill and asked to see the manager and was disgusted to find out that it was my waiter. I explained to him why I was less than satisfied with our experience and he did not apologize. He just said "yea" and rang up my bill. I am appalled. As if that wasn't bad enough, the food wasn't even good. Disappointed in an understatement.

There's been mixed reviews on here, but every time I've ever been I have always enjoyed myself. For me, service has always been really fast whether it was crowded or not. It seemed to be a little slower as soon as they opened, probably because they have less people on staff when they open and they're not "rushing" like they are when it's a full house. Nevertheless, it has never been too long of a wait to get my food. As for the food, it's definitely a great deal for the price. I usually just get their enchilada, beef burrito and chile relleno with an extra side of sour cream. It is always way more than I can eat so I always have lunch for the next day. :) I think service always depends on who you get but I've never had a bad experience. My drinks were always refilled at the right time and the servers always came back multiple times to make sure we were happy. I try to cut them a little slack in the evenings when the restaurant is jam packed and they are rushing around with food and drinks. I have yet to be disappointed in them.

Terrible. I've been in Seattle for two years and when I got back this was one of the first places I hit up because the Mexican food in Seattle wasn't great. It's better in Seattle if that tells you anything. I ordered the fajitas, the dish was nothing more than over cooked sirloin steak in a strange sauce. Even I could do fajitas better than that at home. Service was slow at 11:30am. Really disappointed, the food could be so much better.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
